Este livro é fruto de um trabalho iniciado em 2001, quando o Observatório de Favelas desenvolveu um diagnóstico a pedido da Organização Internacional do Trabalho (OIT) sobre as atividades de crianças no tráfico de drogas. O interesse pelo tema e sua proximidade com questões tratadas pelo Observatório levaram ao desenvolvimento do programa “Rotas de Fuga”, que foi estruturado a partir de quatro eixos: pesquisa, sensibilização, criação de alternativas e prevenção.
Nesta publicação, encontram-se os resultados do eixo de pesquisa do Rotas de Fuga, iniciada em 2004, junto a 230 jovens ligados à rede do tráfico de drogas em 34 favelas cariocas. Os dados aqui reunidos são, portanto, um desdobramento daquele primeiro levantamento realizado em 2001. Trata-se de um trabalho de maior fôlego que visa preencher lacunas daquele e de outros estudos em relação a aspectos do cotidiano dos jovens no tráfico, bem como contextualizar suas condições de vida e as trajetórias por eles seguidas.
Espera-se que este livro sirva de base para novos estudos e, sobretudo, para o desenvolvimento de políticas e ações destinadas a jovens que se encontram vinculados ao tráfico de drogas ou outras atividades ilícitas. Pois, faz-se fundamental que os diversos níveis da sociedade avancem no reconhecimento desses jovens como sujeitos suscetíveis à mudança e não como uma geração perdida.

This book is the result of a work that began in 2001, when the Observatório de Favelas developed a diagnosis requested by the International Labor Organization (OIT) about the activities of children in drug trafficking. The interest for the theme and its proximity with the issues dealt by the Observatório de Favelas made possible the development of the program “Escape Routes”, which was structured from four axles: research, sensitization, creation of alternatives, and prevention. It can be found, in this publication, the results of the axle research, which was initiated in 2004, alongside 230 young people linked to drug trafficking networks in 34 favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, the data collected here are an unfolding of that first research completed in 2001.
It regards a deeper work, which aims to fulfill gaps from those and other studies in relation to everyday aspects of young people in the drug traffic, as well as contextualize their life conditions and paths followed. It is hoped that this book can be a database for new studies and, above all, for the development of policies and actions destined to the young people who find themselves linked to drug trafficking and other illicit activities. Therefore, it is essential that the different levels in society evolve in the recognition of these young people as subjects who are susceptible to change, not as a lost generation. In this sense, the main objective of Escape Routes is to signalize the necessity of the recognition of the humanity and of other possibilities that new paths of life placed for those whose trail have been made through a tough walk.
